Intraocular Lens Choices in Vineland

There are currently three types of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) available for implantation during cataract surgery. They are typically categorized as traditional Monofocal Intraocular Lenses, Toric Intraocular Lenses and Premium Lifestyle Intraocular Lenses.

Traditional Monofocal Lenses

Traditional Monofocal Intraocular Lenses have been used during cataract surgery for many years and are covered by most insurance plans. This type of lens is designed to provide clear distance vision at a fixed focus. Occasionally patients may enjoy the ability to read without glasses or contacts after having this lens implanted but most patients still require glasses for correction of their near and or their intermediate vision. While Dr. Pernelli utilizes the most technologically advanced Monofocal Intraocular Lenses, advances in technology have provided experienced doctors and their patients with additional lens choices.

Toric Intraocular Lenses

The AMO Toric, AMO Toric Multifocal and the Trulign Toric Intraocular Lens are all lenses that offer customized correction of corneal astigmatism and improved distance vision allowing for greater independence from glasses. They are designed to offer a broader range of vision than standard traditional lenses. The AMO Multifocal Toric and the Tulign Toric offer expanded range of vision while correcting your astigmatism.

Premium Lifestyle Intraocular Lenses

The crystalens® Accommodating Intraocular Lens is the only FDA approved accommodating lifestyle Intraocular Lens designed to provide a more natural continuous range of vision including distance, intermediate and near vision and everything in between. Using the latest in technology, crystalens® Accommodating Intraocular Lens is the first and only accommodating lens in the United States. Upon implantation it is designed to mimic the way the natural lens moves inside the eye, automatically focusing for the correct distance.

The Multifocal Intraocular Lens is another Lifestyle Lens option. This type of lens uses a variety of different fixed visual zones that are built into the optics of the lens to provide a continuous range of vision from distance to near. Both the Arysof IQ ReSTOR® and Tecnis Multifocal are Multifocal Intraocular Lenses and provide similar results to the crystalens Accommodating Intraocular Lens.

Crystalens, Acrysof IQ ReSTOR and Tecnis Multifocal Intraocular Lenses are all FDA approved for implantation for cataract surgery. The state-of-the-art technology afforded by these lenses has allowed the vast majority of patients who choose these premium Lifestyle Intraocular Lenses to experience independence from their glasses. Each of these lenses have advantages and compromises, therefore when choosing a premium Lifestyle Intraocular Lens it is important to choose a cataract surgeon who is trained and proficient in implanting all three lens technologies so that your doctor may customize your surgery to meet your individual needs and maximize your visual outcome.

“It is very gratifying as a surgeon to be reminded each time I perform cataract surgery what a difference my surgery makes in my patients’ lives.
