Glaucoma may present with no noticeable symptoms. In later stages, symptoms may include:
- Open angle glaucoma: no initial symptoms; in advanced stages you may experience blind spots, tunnel vision and headaches
- Angle closure glaucoma: sudden spike in eye pressure that immediately causes eye pain, blurry vision, starbursts, halos, severe headache, vomiting, nausea and the potential for vision loss in a few hours
- Congenital glaucoma: possible clouding of the cornea, tearing and eye enlargement
- Normal tension glaucoma: no initial symptoms; in advanced stages you may experience blind spots, tunnel vision and headaches
The doctors of the Eye Institute of South Jersey, PC, David R. Pernelli, MD and Terrance K. Heacox, Jr., OD identify the presence of glaucoma through a comprehensive eye examination and testing. Your risk for developing glaucoma will also be evaluated by looking at other risk factors:

- High intraocular pressure
- Health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
